The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba intercepted an attempt to smuggle cocaine into the country using tuna cans and the structure of a suitcase as a hiding place.
Wiliam Pérez González, the first deputy of the institution, reported this Monday on X that the discovery occurred at José Martí International Airport in Havana and was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Customs of Cuba and the Anti-Drug Agency.
"The intention to introduce drugs using ingenious methods persists, as revealed by the efforts of Customs and the Anti-Drug Agency, the shield of the nation," stated the official, without providing further details about the origin of the cargo or about individuals detained in connection with the case.
The released images show an open can with the seized contents and, next to it, nine others, although it was not confirmed whether all of them contained cocaine.
The Cuban authorities have warned on multiple occasions that the country maintains a "zero tolerance" policy towards drug trafficking and are reinforcing surveillance at ports, airports, and borders to prevent the entry of illicit substances.
In another unusual case, a passenger was arrested with cocaine hidden in a figure of Eleguá, also at the main airport in Havana, highlighting the use of religious items as camouflage for drug trafficking.
In another operation, drugs were found hidden in electric showers and water motors, confirming the variety of methods used by drug traffickers to try to evade customs controls.
The surveillance also revealed packages of narcotics hidden inside a man's body, an extremely risky method that continues to be used despite the health hazards and the high likelihood of detection.
In another case, authorities found drugs hidden in gummy candies and cigarettes, adding a new example of criminal creativity in attempts to introduce illegal substances to the island.
