The process of receiving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) began this Thursday in Santiago de Cuba, and distribution to the usual sales points will start on August 15, according to CUPET.
Through a brief statement published on Telegram, the state-owned company indicated that the distribution schedule will be announced soon through the same channel, which will serve as the main source of information for customers.

CUPET did not provide details about the volume received or the number of sales points that will be supplied in this first stage, nor about how it will be distributed in a province where there are still customers who have not purchased gas since last year.
Before CUPET issued its official statement, journalist Yosmany Mayeta had alerted on Facebook about the possible resumption of gas sales in Santiago de Cuba.
In his post he wrote: “And ‘Emilia’, entering the bay of Santiago de Cuba. With gas or without gas…”.
In June, CUPET announced through its official channel on Telegram the complete suspension of gas distribution in the province, "until the product is available again."
"There will be no distribution of liquefied gas to sales points until GLP is available again in the province. We apologize for the inconvenience," read the brief statement from the company CUPET, which was accompanied by a promise to keep the public informed "in a timely manner."
The announcement, brief yet highly impactful, openly contradicted the statements made just three weeks earlier by the provincial authorities and state media, which claimed that the supply of LPG was “guaranteed” for 100 percent of the customers in the area.
Since then, amid the worsening energy crisis, the residents of this province, like those in the rest of the country, have faced serious difficulties in cooking their food.
In this regard, due to one of the worst phases of the energy crisis currently affecting Cuba, more than 9 million people are cooking today under precarious, unsanitary, and dangerous conditions, as warned by the Food Monitor Program (FMP), an independent organization that has been monitoring access to basic services on the island for three years.

The distribution of liquefied gas has been suspended due to a lack of product supply, as reported by the Base Business Unit of the Territorial Division of Fuel Marketing in June 2025. What challenges does Cuba face in ensuring the supply of liquefied gas?
Cuba is facing financial problems in making payments to international suppliers, which has delayed the offloading of liquefied gas ships in national waters. Additionally, the energy crisis and economic sanctions complicate the situation, limiting the country's ability to ensure a stable supply of LPG.
How has the shortage of liquefied gas affected the Cuban population?
The shortage of liquefied gas has left many Cuban families without viable alternatives for cooking, forcing them to resort to methods such as using charcoal and firewood. This situation is worsened by frequent power outages, increasing the precariousness of access to basic services on the island.
