Rodríguez Pupo emphasized that such incidents confirm the need to exercise caution with these devices and highlighted the importance of community assistance, which proved crucial in preventing further damage this time.

The fact brings to light the latent risk that electric vehicles pose in Cuba, particularly the motorinas.

These devices have been involved in dozens of fires in recent years, many of which occurred indoors.

Experts point to unstable electrical conditions, system overloads, and improper handling of batteries as common causes.

One of the most tragic cases occurred in April in the town of Zaza del Medio, Sancti Spíritus, where the explosion of a gas generator caused a fire that claimed the life of an elderly man bedridden.

Although the government has not released official statistics on the phenomenon, reports on social media and independent media confirm an alarming increase in this type of incidents, some with fatal consequences.

Amid the public transportation crisis and fuel shortages, thousands of Cubans continue to rely on electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles as an essential mobility solution.

Frequently Asked Questions about Motorbike Fires in Cuba

Why are electric scooters dangerous in Cuba?

Electric scooters in Cuba are dangerous due to unstable electrical conditions, system overload, and improper handling of batteries. These factors have led to numerous fires in recent years, some with fatal consequences. The lack of certified parts and clear regulations exacerbates the problem, forcing users to improvise solutions that can be hazardous.

What measures can be taken to prevent motorcycle fires?

To prevent motorcycle fires, it is essential to conduct regular maintenance with qualified personnel and avoid overloading the batteries. It is also recommended to keep the engines away from flammable materials and ensure that the electrical systems comply with current safety regulations. Allowing the batteries to cool before charging them and not leaving them connected for more than 7 or 8 hours are essential practices to reduce risks.

What is the Cuban government's response to the increase in motorcycle fires?

The Cuban government has not published official statistics on the increase of fires caused by motorbikes, and the institutional response has been criticized for its ineffectiveness. Civil society has taken a more active role in preventing and supporting the victims of these incidents, in a context where state measures are limited or non-existent.

Why do motorbikes remain popular despite the risks?

Motorcycles remain popular in Cuba due to the public transportation crisis and fuel shortages. These electric vehicles have become an essential means of mobility for many Cubans, which increases the risk of accidents and fires if precautions are not taken. The need for transportation outweighs the fears associated with their dangers.
