The police arrested a woman in Havana accused of being involved in drug trafficking. She was apprehended in the neighborhood Cocosolo, municipality Marianao, according to reports from the official profile El Cubano Fiel.
According to the cited source, the arrest took place at the suspect's residence, where the agents seized a quantity of the substance known as crack.
According to witnesses, the intervention was swift: “the police arrived immediately, and several officers got out of the cars, entered the trafficker's house, and after showing her the search warrant, they arrested her.”
Local residents claim that the woman had previously had conflicts with the authorities and describe her as a troublesome person in the neighborhood.
After the operation, the accused was taken into custody and the outcome of the case will now depend on the judicial process. Authorities indicated that with this arrest, “there is one less drug on the streets.”
What is "crack"?
The crack is a highly addictive drug derived from cocaine. It appears in the form of white crystals or rocks and is smoked in a pipe, producing an immediate but short-lasting effect.
It is obtained by processing powdered cocaine with water and baking soda or ammonia.
Unlike powdered cocaine, which is typically inhaled, crack is smoked, allowing the chemicals to reach the brain quickly, producing an intense euphoria within seconds.
Its effects appear almost instantaneously, between 5 and 10 seconds after inhalation, but their duration is short, lasting approximately 5 to 15 minutes.
It triggers a feeling of extreme pleasure and a surge of energy, but this is followed by a sharp decline that can lead to anxiety, paranoia, and depression.
Due to the intensity and short duration of its effects, crack is highly addictive. Users often develop a strong dependence rapidly, which leads them to consume the drug repeatedly within short periods of time.
The prolonged use of crack has serious health consequences. It can affect the central nervous system, lead to heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory problems. Moreover, frequent consumption causes cognitive decline and psychiatric issues, such as psychosis and severe depression.
The crack is one of the most dangerous drugs due to its high addictive potential and the severe damage it causes to physical and mental health.
Increase in anti-drug police operations in Cuba
In response to the rising traffic and consumption of "the chemical" and other drugs among youth nationwide, the regime has intensified its efforts to curb this alarming phenomenon with systematic police operations, which have resulted in dozens of arrests in Havana and other provinces, along with the tightening of penal regulations against those responsible for these crimes.
The day before, the same source reported the arrest of two other individuals for the distribution of the "chemical" in the Centro Habana municipality, near El Curita park, an area identified as a regular spot for drug consumption and trafficking.
In recent months, exemplary trials have taken place, resulting in sentences of up to 20 years in prison for possession and sale of narcotics.
In February, the Ministry of Justice announced the creation of the National Drug Observatory (OND), featuring an early warning system to identify new substances and monitor consumption and trafficking trends, with the support of the Police and Customs.
However, the government strategy does not seem to be sufficient in the face of a phenomenon that remains out of control and continues to escalate.
