Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident, although witnesses point to a combination of high speed and possible alcohol consumption as factors that may have triggered the tragedy.

This has not been the only fatal incident in recent hours. Also, on the night of Friday, the young Cuban doctor Miguel Varela González, 25 years old, lost his life in an accident at kilometer 120 of the Havana-Pinar highway, when the driver of a trailer from the state company Transcupet lost control of the vehicle.

The impact resulted in one fatality and two injuries. The deceased was Varela, a doctor from Pinar del Río, remembered by family, friends, and colleagues as a young man full of projects and dreams cut short too soon.

The news has caused profound shock in Pinar del Río, where institutions such as the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) and cultural leaders have expressed their sorrow at his passing. “Life took your company from us too soon and in a manner too cruel,” wrote a friend on social media, reflecting the feelings of those who knew him.

Both accidents, which occurred just hours apart in different parts of the country, bring back into focus the serious issue of road safety in Cuba.

The poor technical condition of many vehicles, the inadequacy of the roads, driver fatigue, and the lack of preventive measures contribute to reckless driving, creating a situation that claims hundreds of lives each year.
