A 28-year-old Cuban was found dead earlier this week in Suriname, after being detained by the police of that country.
According to sources that confirm a note published in the group Facebook "Cubanos Comercio revolico Suriname", the young man was named Omar Cruz and died under shocking circumstances in the cell where he was being held at the Munder police station, in the Paramaribo district.
Cruz had been arrested on Sunday after jumping in front of a moving vehicle. The car reportedly sustained damage to the windshield. Shortly thereafter, the police proceeded to arrest the Cuban.
The information that has emerged on social media suggests that the young man may have taken his own life inside the cell, using a cord from his jacket.
Close associates of Cruz claim that the young man was using narcotics, which may have led him to the fatal decision.
"No tiene otra excusa que la droga, estaba esclavizado. Worked with me for a few days at my regular job, on Saturday he left to smoke at his old job and on Sunday the drug took control of him and he ended his own life," commented an acquaintance.
This is not the only case that has involved tragic endings for Cubans in Suriname. In July, a 35-year-old Cuban identified as Yailín Torres was brutally murdered in that country in front of her three-year-old daughter.
The woman was reportedly killed by a citizen of the Dominican Republic, who later took his own life by hanging.
The victim worked as a cook at a gold mine called Garimbo, where she was found deceased.
The crime occurred inside the mining camp where Yailín was cooking.
The most shocking thing is that his daughter, Alejandra - which is the name of the youngest and not the mother, as some profiles suggest - witnessed the murder.
