Tyler Robinson, accused of murdering the conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a university in Utah, was charged this Tuesday with aggravated homicide, a charge that could lead to the death penalty if he is convicted.

According to the agency AP, the prosecution indicated that Robinson's DNA was found on the trigger of the weapon used in the attack.

The Utah County prosecutor, Jeff Gray, described the murder as "an American tragedy" while announcing the charges.

Kirk was shot on September 10 while talking to students at Utah Valley University in Orem, and died shortly after. According to the indictment, Robinson fired a bolt-action rifle from the rooftop of a nearby building, hitting him in the neck.

In addition to the charge of aggravated homicide, Robinson, 22 years old, faces accusations of discharging a firearm with aggravating circumstances—punishable by life imprisonment—and obstruction of justice, which could result in up to 15 years in prison.

His first virtual appearance was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The investigation included the review of surveillance videos and evidence found on the roof of the building from where the shot was fired.

The FBI reported that Robinson's DNA also matched that of a towel wrapped around the rifle and a screwdriver found at the scene. Robinson was arrested on Thursday, September 11 near St. George, in southern Utah.

The family of the accused has not wanted to make any comments to the press, and it was unclear whether they had a lawyer at the time of the initial hearing.

Kirk, founder of the organization Turning Point USA, had become an influential figure within the American conservative movement and a close ally of President Donald Trump, who recently –in relation to the events– called for the death penalty for the perpetrator of this murder.

His assassination has sparked concern about the rise of political violence in a country marked by polarization. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that investigators are still working to determine a motive.

It was noted that Robinson's partner was a transgender individual, although it has not been determined whether that factor was related to the attack. Authorities have stated that they believe he acted alone, but they are examining whether anyone was aware of his plans.

In a Senate hearing, FBI director Kash Patel stated that Robinson had written a note expressing his intention to kill Kirk.

Patel also indicated that the participants of a chat on the Discord platform, where the suspect interacted with more than 20 people, are being investigated.

Amidst the turmoil, vigils and tributes have been held in memory of Kirk in various cities across the United States. Meanwhile, the debate over political violence and its consequences continues to shape the national agenda.
