President Donald Trump announced "with a high degree of certainty" that the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot on a university campus in Utah on Wednesday, has been apprehended.

"I believe that, with a high degree of certainty, we have it in custody," Trump said this Friday morning during a television appearance on Fox News, adding that he received the information "five minutes before going on air."

The president advocated for the death penalty for the perpetrator of the crime.

"In Utah, the death penalty exists... the governor is very determined to apply it in this case, and they should be. North Carolina also has it, but we must ensure that it is so. That was an atrocious crime," he stated.

Trump revealed that he spoke with Kirk's wife and that she is "devastated."

"But despite the devastation, they want to move forward with Turning Point USA; they believe they can achieve it," he added.

Without giving many details, the president mentioned that someone "very close to [the suspect] informed on him." According to him, a religious pastor, "a friend" of someone involved in the investigation, convinced the father of the murderer to turn him in.

"The local police and the governor... Everyone has done a great job," he stated, adding that the authorities would provide more information throughout the day.

Subsequently, U.S. media have reported that the detained individual is Tyler Robinson, 22 years old, from Utah.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had requested the public's assistance in identifying the killer of Charlie Kirk, one of Donald Trump's closest allies, who was shot dead on September 10 at a public event on the campus of Utah Valley University in the city of Orem.

The FBI office in Salt Lake City shared two photos of the suspect online and set up a phone line and a website to gather information.

The federal agency even reported that it was offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information.

Finally, a video was released on Thursday showing the subject fleeing after committing his crime.

The assassination of Kirk

Charlie Kirk, 31 years old, died after being shot by a bullet from a nearby building that struck him in the neck.

Kirk was the founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, an influential conservative organization that promotes its ideas in colleges and high schools across the United States.

He was married and had two small children.

His death shocked the country, not only due to his proximity to Trump but also because he had been a staunch advocate for the right to bear arms, going so far as to say that "deaths by gunfire are the price of freedom."

President Trump held the "radical left" responsible for the assassination and promised justice, while leaders from both parties condemned the attack.

The university community, for its part, has questioned the security failures during the event, while the debate persists on social media between those who remember Kirk as a patriot and those who see him as a victim of the very policies he defended.
