The New College of Florida announced this Tuesday that it will erect a statue on its campus in memory of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was killed last week in Utah during a university event.
"Today we announced that we will commission a statue of Charlie Kirk to honor his legacy and his incredible work following his tragic assassination," the institution stated in a statement released on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
According to the university, the project will be funded with private contributions from community leaders and will be located in a spot on campus that will be announced in the coming months.
The center emphasized that the statue will represent a commitment to the defense of freedom of expression and civic dialogue in American public life.
The tribute will include a figure of Kirk seated with a microphone in hand, evoking his debates at universities across the country, where he became a leading figure of the youth conservative movement.
Kirk, 31 years old, was killed on September 10 at the University of Utah Valley after being shot in the neck while participating in an event.
The alleged attacker, Tyler Robinson, 22 years old, has been arrested and is facing murder charges.
Founder of Turning Point USA at just 18 years old, Kirk emerged as one of the most prominent figures on the American right and a close ally of President Donald Trump. His organization established itself as a key space for mobilizing young people around the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
In April 2023, Kirk sparked controversy by declaring that deaths from firearms were “unfortunately” a price worth paying to preserve the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to bear arms.
Following his assassination, tributes have multiplied in various parts of the United States, as the debate over political violence and national polarization continues to intensify.
The government has issued threats against citizens who in any way justify Kirk's crime.
This week, the University of Miami dismissed neurologist Michelle Bravo after she shared a message on social media comparing the crime against Kirk to the situation of the Palestinian population in recent years.
"What was done to Charlie Kirk has been done to countless Palestinian babies, children, women, and men, not only in the last two years of the ongoing genocide but for decades. And every time it happened and was caught on camera for all of us to see, Charlie Kirk would come out and say, 'I love this, I want more of this, the people who did this are amazing, I love them and they should keep doing it forever.' As Malcolm said, the chickens have come home to roost," stated the expert's message.
