At least 49 people were injured, including nine minors, following a massive accident that occurred on the morning of Monday, September 22, on the road to Esperanza, on the outskirts of Santa Clara, Villa Clara, where two transport buses collided head-on.
According to the updated report on social media from the Provincial Health Directorate of Villa Clara, among the injured are four patients reported in serious condition, of which two adults are in critical condition and two others—one adult and one minor (adolescent)—are in serious condition. All of them were immediately transferred to hospital facilities where they are receiving specialized care.
The two critically ill patients are undergoing surgery due to severe injuries: an open thoracic fracture and a depressed skull fracture, both potentially fatal.
The two critically ill patients are also in the operating room: one with a luxation fracture of the pelvis and hip, and an open fracture of the tibia, and the other with significant head trauma.
The remaining injured individuals present multiple contusions and less severe wounds, but they remain under medical observation as a precautionary measure, as specified by health authorities.
The incident occurred in an area known as La Rosita, when two buses collided under circumstances that are still under investigation. Emergency teams, health personnel, and officers from the Revolutionary National Police arrived at the scene to assist the victims, stabilize the situation, and collect evidence to clarify the causes of the crash.
The 40 injured adults are being treated at the ‘Arnaldo Milián Castro’ Provincial Hospital, while the nine injured minors were admitted to the ‘José Luis Miranda’ Pediatric Hospital.
So far, there are no reported deaths, although the seriousness of some injuries keeps the local healthcare system on high alert.
This accident has had a significant impact on the community and has revived the debate on the technical conditions of public transportation in Cuba, as well as the need to strengthen road safety measures on interprovincial highways.
