In recent days, a video has gone viral showing a young man from Hialeah driving at high speed in the wrong direction on the I-95 highway in Miami while attempting to escape from the police.
The images, shared by local media, shocked drivers passing through the area at that moment and have raised questions: What led him to put so many lives at risk? Why did he decide to flee?
The protagonist of the incident is Abel Campos, a 19-year-old young man whose nationality has not been disclosed and who is now facing serious charges following a reckless escape attempt.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Campos was seen last Wednesday driving a white Honda “recklessly” along the north shoulder of I-95 near Northwest 151st Street, around 4:00 p.m.
The video, shared by the outlet Only in Dade and other news sources, showcases dramatic moments: the vehicle swerving between cars, weaving through construction zones, and ultimately driving against the flow of traffic.
The dashboard camera of a patrol car captured the entire sequence of the chase, providing a clear perspective of what could have been a massive tragedy.
The images show how an agent attempts to perform a PIT maneuver (a police tactic to stop vehicles) without success.
Campos, far from giving up, maneuvers the car out of the construction zone, makes a U-turn, and starts heading south… but in the northbound lane.
In a particularly distressing moment, one can see how the Honda "takes a brief breath" as it hits a pothole within the construction zone, momentarily lifting off the pavement before continuing its frantic escape.
"Raise your damn hands!": The final arrest
The chase ended when the patrol car managed to ram the Honda for the second time.
The vehicle comes to a stop, and Campos gets out of the car with his hands raised. The dashboard camera clearly captures the moment when the officer points his gun at him and shouts:
"Put your damn hands up! On the ground!" Campos obeyed and was arrested at the scene.
"What’s wrong with you, man? Why are you running?" the officer is heard asking.
But it is the following conversation that provides a first clue about the reasons behind this dangerous action. Visibly agitated, Campos confesses to the officer: “I don’t have insurance.”
The agent, incredulous, replied: “It's just a fine. Look at what you did. Do you know how many lives you put at risk?”
Charges and legal consequences
After his arrest, Campos was taken to the Miami-Dade County jail.
According to the records, he faces charges for fleeing and attempting to evade at high speed, as well as reckless driving causing damage
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, FHP authorities confirmed that, miraculously, no one was injured.
Nonetheless, the case has sparked debate over the disproportionate reaction of the young man to a potential minor infraction.
What drove Campos to flee like that?
Not all the personal or emotional details that led Abel Campos to react in that way are yet known.
But what is clear is that his decision not to stop for the police quickly escalated into a high-risk chase, involving reckless driving, construction zones, and against-the-flow traffic on one of the busiest highways in South Florida.
In this context, Campos's excuse—lack of insurance—turns out, as the officer pointed out, to be disproportionate to the danger he posed to others. What could have ended in an administrative fine resulted in an arrest with several criminal charges.
