After interruption due to a malfunction, the Guiteras will go offline again for maintenance

The Guiteras plant, after repairing a transformer, plans a four-day maintenance followed by a six-month maintenance period to improve its generation while Cuba faces massive blackouts due to an energy deficit.

The Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant has resumed its operations and maintains a generation of over 200 megawatts, after fixing a fault in a 6 kV transformer that had necessitated a reduction in power the previous day.

According to the official reporter José Miguel Solís, the management of the plant confirmed that the intervention allowed for the stabilization of the unit and expedited the preparation for upcoming maintenance tasks.

The technical deputy director, engineer Román Pérez Castañeda, explained that the team from Guiteras is preparing for approximately four days of maintenance, focusing on the high-temperature reheater, cleaning of the regenerative air heaters, and actions aimed at reducing water consumption.

The immediate objective is to reinforce availability following the repair of the transformer and to reduce the operational stresses that accompanied the load drop from the previous day.

Pérez Castañeda added that, following the maneuver to repair the 6 kV transformer, there is a suspicion of a slight increase in water usage, an indicator that will be addressed in the short intervention announced to optimize parameters before the next operating cycle.

Once that step is completed, the center will carry out the last light maintenance of the year, before undertaking a general maintenance period of six months aimed at consolidating a stable generation close to 300 megawatts, increasing online uptime, and maintaining an acceptable water consumption level.

The resumption of operations above 200 MW and the established technical schedule aim to improve the sustained contribution of the country's largest thermoelectric plant in the short and medium term; however, so far, these maintenance strategies have not addressed the overall wear and tear of the National Electric System (SEN).

The management of Guiteras emphasized that the plan will be crucial for enhancing the reliability of the unit in the coming months.

Cuba woke up this Saturday engulfed in a new day of massive blackouts, with an anticipated impact exceeding 1,800 megawatts (MW), according to the official report from the Electric Union (UNE) on the status of the National Electric System (SEN).

The forecast for tonight's peak hours anticipates a total availability of 1,544 MW against a maximum demand of 3,350 MW, resulting in a deficit of 1,806 MW. If conditions remain the same, the impacts could reach 1,876 MW during that time.
