The Catholic Church called on the faithful this Monday to pray for the protection of Santiago de Cuba ahead of the imminent arrival of Category 5 hurricane Melissa, which threatens to hit the eastern region with winds exceeding 250 kilometers per hour.

According to what was published by the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba on its official Facebook profile, the prayer titled “Prayer for Santiago de Cuba in the Face of Hurricane Melissa” calls upon God to halt “the fury of the winds” and protect those who suffer the most.

"Extend your mighty hand and stop the fury of the winds; protect our homes, our temples, and all those who suffer the most," the text emphasized.

Just hours before Melissa makes a catastrophic impact on the eastern part of Cuba, the text emphasized: "Oh all-powerful and eternal God, who governs the heavens and the earth with wisdom, look kindly upon your children who inhabit this city of Santiago de Cuba, threatened by the force of Hurricane Melissa."

The prayer of supplication asks for serenity for hearts, prudence for authorities, and strength for those who serve and assist others, while calling for unity among Cubans in the face of adversity.

"Let this trial bind us together as brothers, and when we weather the storm, may we recognize that your mercy is greater than any tempest," the prayer expresses.

The call from the Archdiocese comes as the Civil Defense declared a state of cyclone alarm in six provinces in the eastern part of the country, including Santiago de Cuba, where preparations are ongoing in anticipation of the imminent arrival of the powerful hurricane Melissa.

The Cuban regime stated this Monday that the healthcare system in Santiago de Cuba is prepared to face the arrival of the powerful Category 5 hurricane Melissa, with preventive measures and medical care in place to protect the population.

However, the report from the official Cuban News Agency (ACN) contrasts sharply with the reality of the Cuban healthcare system, which is experiencing a deep crisis characterized by a shortage of supplies, a lack of basic medications, and reports of collapse in provincial hospitals.

Similarly, the Minister of Energy and Mines of Cuba, Vicente de la O Levy, assured this Monday that the line repair brigades are already prepared to undertake the recovery efforts of the electrical system in the eastern region of the country following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
