A man identified as Pablo López Infante, who had been trapped by the rise of the Cauto River in the province of Granma, was finally rescued alive this Saturday, according to a family member in posts shared on social media.
The incident took place in one of the areas most affected by the flooding caused by Hurricane Melissa, which has left dozens of communities isolated and thousands of people evacuated in eastern Cuba.
They have rescued him, he is fine, thank God, declared a relative of the man, relieved after hours of uncertainty amid the river's overflow, which continues to pose a risk to the nearby localities of Río Cauto and Guamo.
Details of the rescue are unknown. His daughter had reported on social media that her father is an operator who became trapped in the rising waters of the Cauto River while on duty.
In a Facebook video, the young woman expressed that they had spent nearly 72 hours without a clear response from the authorities regarding the whereabouts of López Infante or his condition.
The woman from Granma explained that her father went out "to fulfill his job" and became stranded at the Miradero electrical substation near the Cauto River.
The hurricane Melissa has hit eastern Cuba hard, causing the overflow of the Cauto River and isolating several rural communities. In the municipality of Río Cauto, the rains have left houses flooded, roads cut off, and hundreds of people evacuated to shelters.
Local media such as CMKX Radio Bayamo reported that the situation remains critical in areas like Guamo and Los Cayos, where rescue operations for individuals and distribution of humanitarian aid are ongoing.
The authorities maintain the alert for possible new overflow due to the persistent rains in the region.
In the early morning, nearly 3,000 people were evacuated due to the rising river.
