Family seeks help from Holguín: “If we were doing poorly before the cyclone, now we are even worse.”

A family in the town of Tacámara, in the municipality of Báguanos, is reporting abandonment following the passage of Hurricane Melissa. They live with their grandmother who is bedridden, their sick mother, and a sister who has health issues. They say they have no food, no means to cook, and no safe housing.

Luis Miguel Pérez, a resident of Tacámara in the municipality of Báguanos, sought help on social media after finding himself in a critical situation along with his family following the passage of Hurricane Melissa

He claims that local authorities have not responded to his case despite visits from neighborhood organizations.

Pérez posted on the Facebook profile of the Revolico Báguanos group that his family is going through a desperate situation. “If we were in a bad place before the cyclone, now we are in a worse one,” he wrote.

He reported that he lives with his bedridden grandmother, his ill mother, and his sister with health issues, in a house without proper cooking facilities or enough food.

According to her complaint, although neighborhood representatives visited her, the municipal government of Báguanos has not shown up, which led her to claim that the authorities "are not interested in her situation."

Neighbors confirmed that they live in the Tacámara area, near the entrance of Hicacos, and expressed their outrage at the lack of institutional response.

“Beg us like always, there’s no way that government will become sensitive to those in greatest need,” commented a user, who requested urgent attention for the family.

The complainant also warned that if classes begin on Monday, they have nowhere to live, which exacerbates their vulnerability in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which has caused severe damage in eastern Cuba.

Numerous videos shared on social media confirm the devastating impact of the floods and strong winds caused by Melissa in much of eastern Cuba.

A number of testimonies recount how water covers entire neighborhoods, while warning about the destruction of their homes and the loss of nearly all their belongings.

Mariannis, a mother of five in Guantánamo lamented that “the cyclone took everything from me, it took my house, and left me with nothing,” a statement that encapsulates the disaster that changed her life.

A video shared on social media this Saturday reveals the extent of the floods in the municipality of Río Cauto, in the province of Granma, where residents claim that “90% of the people will lose everything.”

Residents of the Grito de Yara community in Río Cauto, Granma, reported this Saturday that they feel “completely abandoned,” without communications or basic assistance after the flooding caused by the storm.

The young Alejandro, better known as Toti and a resident of Cayo Granma, in the bay of Santiago de Cuba, lost everything after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, as he showed the rubble where his house once stood, surrounded by wet mattresses, collapsed walls, and the desperation of not having food or medicine for his family.
