The US dollar reached a rate of 440 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market this Monday, according to updated data from elTOQUE.
The American dollar is the most sought after by Cubans for cash transactions and remittances. Its price has been plummeting for days. This Monday, it opens with a value that is 10 pesos lower than the previous day.
On its part, the euro is trading today at 500 Cuban pesos, which is also 10 pesos less than on Sunday. However, it is the strongest currency in the parallel market. Its value reflects the interest of Cubans in preserving savings in a more stable currency in light of the devaluation of the CUP.
The MLC (freely convertible currency), used in state-owned stores, is valued at 205 Cuban pesos per unit. Its value is lower than that of the dollar and the euro, but it serves as an important reference for those purchasing basic goods in the state-controlled trade system.
