World Central Kitchen (WCK), the humanitarian organization founded by chef José Andrés, has extended its operations to Cuba for aid following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
WCK began distributing food kits and kitchen equipment to affected Cubans, the organization reported on its social media.
"WCK has expanded our response to Hurricane Melissa in Cuba. In collaboration with Friends of Cáritas Cuba and Cáritas Cuba," reads a post on Facebook.
“We are distributing food kits to families who are able to cook for themselves. Each kit includes enough ingredients for 25 meals, providing essential nutrition while communities recover,” they specified.
Additionally, the WCK teams are also providing kitchen equipment to households that have lost the necessary appliances to prepare meals, they add.
WCK, founded in 2010 by Spanish chef José Andrés, is a non-profit non-governmental organization that provides meals to disaster-stricken areas during times of food scarcity.
It was initially created after the earthquake that affected Haiti in 2010, a country where it began to operate again a few weeks ago following the passage of Melissa, as announced on its social media.
The hurricane Melissa swept through entire communities in eastern Cuba, leaving thousands of families without shelter or electricity. The devastation has sparked a wave of international solidarity, with shipments of humanitarian aid from various Latin American countries and non-governmental organizations.
