The Cuban regime announced that the natural water distributed to the victims of Hurricane Melissa in Río Cauto, Granma province, will be sold for 40 pesos per household, on a “symbolic” basis.

The clarification was published on Facebook by José Manuel Rodríguez Valdivia, a local government official, who shared a note from Misladis Alcolea Núñez, the municipal director of Commerce and Gastronomy.

The official explained that the resource "is not a donation," but rather comes from the state disaster reserve, and that the charge is applied to cover "logistical costs."

According to the statement, water will be distributed at the ten Zone Defense Councils, at a rate of one unit per family.

The authorities emphasized that the measure aims to ensure the organized distribution of water to those affected by the cyclone, although the amount of water is clearly "symbolic," just as the price is "symbolic."

Río Cauto was one of the areas most affected by Hurricane Melissa, which in October caused flooding and material losses in the eastern part of the country.

This is not the first clarification issued by the local government following the hurricane's passage. This Wednesday, the same official, José Manuel Rodríguez Valdivia, published a communication from the Department of Labor and Social Security stating that the mattresses provided to the victims would not be considered donations either.

On that occasion, the authorities explained that the State “subsidizes, but does not give away”, establishing a partial payment of 456 pesos for those with economic means, and free distribution only for cases of social assistance.”

Rodríguez had previously reported on the sale of some sausages and ground meat to the residents of Río Cauto, which was also a token and insufficient amount for the families who lost everything.
