The citizen Sofiel Soto Miranda, 53 years old, was found dead on Friday afternoon at 12:40 PM, in the Ariguanabo River, in the province of Artemisa.

According to the official newspaper El Artemiseño, the discovery shocked the residents of the Los Pinareños neighborhood, where the deceased was well-known.

A team of reporters went to the victim's home and spoke with her sister, Lilia Rosa Soto Miranda, who confirmed the news and the cause of death, without providing any further public details on the matter.

The woman explained that Sofiel, whom everyone affectionately called “Minito,” had been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia since a young age and was receiving medical care at the Ariguanabo Mental Health Center, where he was frequently medicated.

According to Lilia Rosa's testimony, her brother's condition caused him to wander frequently, both during the day and at night, although he never usually headed towards the river area.

His usual route, he specified, went from the neighborhood where he lived to the area surrounding the hospital, a journey he made repeatedly.

Consternation in the community

The death of Sofiel has left the community deeply shocked.

Neighbors from the Los Pinareños neighborhood describe him as a noble, humble, approachable, and very family-oriented man, who was never aggressive despite his illness.

Many of them have reached out to the family to express their condolences and support them in their grief, highlighting the affection that had been earned in the area.

From the newsroom that reported the case, condolences were sent to the family and friends of Sofiel Soto Miranda, in a context of shared grief throughout the neighborhood over a loss that many describe as unexpected and tragic.

This Friday, it was also revealed that a young man identified as Lázaro Matos, from the town of San Luis, Baracoa, was found dead in the area of El Paso de los Alemanes - a geographical feature located along the road from Baracoa to Maisí - a place that is now mentioned with fear and concern among the neighbors.

A disturbing element that raises doubts about the circumstances of the crime is that Lázaro's body was found without his undergarment, which opens the possibility of a woman's involvement in the incident, who could have been the young man's companion or an accomplice in the murder.
