A 23-year-old man died instantly after being struck by a tourist service vehicle that lost control on a steep incline of the road in the Santiago municipality of Segundo Frente, as he was trying to merge onto the main road from Loma Blanca.
The young man, well-known in the community for his reserved nature and his work repairing engine parts, had stopped his motor to take the main road when the collision occurred, local sources confirmed, although they did not specify the exact date of the incident.
The impact was direct and left no room for maneuver, reported independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada through his profile on Facebook.
According to the report, the car was carrying two men and a woman who, according to unofficial accounts cited by residents, fled the scene because they were transporting "unauthorized goods," a common practice in the black market in that rural area.
The escape left even more outrage in a community that reports repeated accidents on that same stretch.
The young man's father, who was traveling to Havana, returned after receiving the news. His son would turn years old on the upcoming November 19, a future that was cut short on a road whose lack of maintenance and oversight has once again come to light, Mayeta recalled.
Neighbors and loved ones posted messages of sorrow and calls for justice while awaiting action from the authorities to clarify the case and determine accountability.
