Elianis Martínez, a young Cuban dancer, is among the five people who lost their lives following an armed attack that occurred in the early hours of November 18 at the Lacoss bar in the Mexican state of Puebla.
According to reports from local media such as Almanaque and Puebla en Línea, armed men burst into the establishment and opened fire on workers and customers, later setting a fire before fleeing.
Among the victims were a DJ, several waiters, and the Cuban dancer, whose identity was recognized by friends and family on the deceased's Instagram profile.
The head of the state Public Security Secretariat, Francisco Sánchez González, confirmed the incident at a press conference.
He indicated that authorities are investigating two possible motives: an attempt to collect extortion or a conflict related to drug dealing.
The surveillance cameras captured six individuals arriving at the location on three motorcycles.
Once inside the bar, they fired at the staff and started a fire. All the material was turned over to the State Attorney General's Office, which is responsible for the investigations.
Identification of the victim
Although the Prosecutor's Office has not yet officially confirmed the names of the victims, multiple social media posts indicate that the deceased dancer is Elianis Martínez, of Cuban origin, residing in Mexico.
His name and photographs began to circulate shortly after the attack, accompanied by farewell messages.
After the initial dissemination of the news, another Cuban woman with the same name -but residing in Italy- denied on Instagram the rumors of her death, after some media mistakenly used her image to identify the deceased.
So far, no arrests have been reported in connection with the incident in Puebla.
The Prosecutor's Office is working with video footage and other evidence to identify those responsible for the attack, which highlights the rising violence in Mexico once again.
