The police arrested a man who injured another by shooting him with a firearm in the municipality of Colón, in Matanzas.

The assailant, identified as Arnais Izquierdo Duarte, ambushed the 64-year-old victim near the baseball stadium in the town of San José de los Ramos and shot him with a Winchester rifle, causing minor injuries to his arm and stomach, reported the Facebook profile “Con Todos La Victoria”, associated with the Ministry of the Interior.

According to the version of events shared by the page, Izquierdo was on horseback and intoxicated when he committed the assault, allegedly due to personal issues with the victim. He was in illegal possession of the weapon.

The detainee is facing criminal proceedings for assault, in addition to previous records for public disorder, according to the profile. "Justice will take care of it," he warned.

The publication described the incident as a “scene worthy of a Western film” and stated that “nothing justifies acting like savages and being detached from the values that have been upheld in our community for years.”

In the usual rhetoric of the government, the note asserted that events like this do not correspond with "a cultured and educated society" like the Cuban one. However, the fact once again highlights the escalation of violence in Cuba and the existence of firearms beyond state control.

In recent years, multiple cases of the use of firearms, both homemade and conventional, have been reported in thefts, assaults, and violent incidents across various provinces in the country, which represents a growing threat to society.

In response to the alarming rise in violent incidents involving firearms, last March the government approved new regulations to strengthen control and oversight over these, as well as ammunition and accessories.
