The match between the Cocodrilos de Matanzas and the Toros de Camagüey, part of the schedule for the Serie Nacional de Béisbol, was suspended this Tuesday following reports of a theft within the stadium premises, in an incident deemed "unacceptable" by the sporting authorities and the teams involved.
According to local media such as Radio Cadena Agramonte and the official page La Banda Yumurina, individuals unrelated to the event gained access to the dugout and locker room of the Matanzas team before the game began, where they carried out a deliberate robbery that left several players without their belongings and sports equipment.
“No it was not a minor theft; it was a deliberate looting that left several players in a state of total helplessness,” states the statement from La Banda Yumurina.
"Some athletes were left literally with nothing, just the uniform they were wearing for warm-up," highlights the text.
Among the stolen items are reported personalized gloves, bats, protective gear, athletic footwear, mobile phones, wallets, and personal belongings of significant sentimental value, as confirmed by journalist Luis Carlos Céspedes Fernández from the station Cadena Agramonte.
The management of the Matanzas team, along with the sports authorities, decided to suspend the match immediately, considering that the players were not in a mental or physical condition to take the field after the theft.
"You cannot ask an athlete to step onto the field and give their best when they have just been a victim of a violation of their most private space," the statement added.
Both the leaders of the yumurino team and the fans have demanded a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and enhance security in the country's stadiums, especially at a time when Cuban baseball is experiencing a deep institutional and infrastructure crisis.
