The arrest of a Cuban and two other individuals for the armed robbery of a high-end cellphone from a woman on Monday in Monterrey, Mexico, led the police to discover a shipment of 90 kilograms of marijuana in a house in the city center.
Around 2:50 p.m. on November 24, authorities apprehended Liván O., a 26-year-old Cuban national; Jairo Rivaldo R., 25, from Mexico; and Bárbara M., 23, a native of Colombia, for their involvement in the robbery, a case that may be linked to drug trafficking activities, which are currently under police investigation.
The Cuban, using a firearm, allegedly stole an iPhone 17 valued at approximately 34,000 pesos from a woman who had arranged to sell the device via Facebook Marketplace, according to information disseminated by Mexican news outlets.
The 38-year-old victim arrived at the transaction location by car with her husband, but the alleged buyer - Liván O. - got into the vehicle and pointed a gun at them, forcing her to hand over her cellphone. He then fled on foot.
After being alerted by the woman, police officers patrolling the area identified the Cuban near the location of the assault and intercepted him as he attempted to hide in a house.
While they were arresting him, Liván O.'s two accomplices tried to stop it by attacking the agents, who also detained them at the intersection of Juan Álvarez Street and 15 de Mayo Street, in the city center. The Cuban was found in possession of a firearm of the pistol type.
On Tuesday afternoon, members of the Monterrey Police and the State Investigation Agency carried out a search of the residence where the Cuban had attempted to take refuge after the robbery, and in the property, they discovered 89 bags of marijuana, weighing approximately one kilogram each, as reported by the digital newspaper Milenio.
A digital scale, a sealer, and plastic bags were also found at the location, leading authorities to suspect that doses of the drug were being distributed there, according to a source speaking to the press.
The facts are under investigation by the Public Ministry specialized in drug dealing.
