A new partial collapse shook the building of the former Higher Institute of Design (ISDI) in Havana this Wednesday, just days after architects warned about its imminent collapse.
The company Gómez y Durán Construcciones SRL confirmed the incident on social media with the message: “When abandonment turns into partial collapse. The alerts were of no use,” accompanied by images of the collapsed side of the building.
The company had reported days earlier the serious deterioration of the building with a public warning: “When abandonment takes over the buildings. Former headquarters of the Higher Institute of Design (ISDI).”
The media CubaNet also reported the incident and published a video on Facebook indicating that the collapse occurred around noon.
According to testimonies gathered by the media, neighbors and workers reported seeing people inside the building moments before the collapse.
"Several homeless individuals sleep there," the witnesses added, concerned about the possibility of victims. So far, it has not been officially confirmed whether there were any injuries or fatalities.
CubaNet also indicated that after the collapse, neighbors went to the site to collect bricks and debris from the fallen material, reflecting the precarious situation faced by the people of Havana, where rubble is often reused to repair homes.
The building, which housed the ISDI for decades and is part of the architectural heritage of the capital, is experiencing progressive deterioration due to a lack of maintenance and institutional neglect.
