The former Matanzas player Lázaro Junco, who is facing a challenging health situation, stated that he feels as well as can be expected.
"I can tell those people who have cared and who still appreciate and esteem me with the same affection they had when I was an active athlete. I can tell them that at this moment I have an injury in my esophagus, which I am treating with chemotherapy," said the home run hitter, in an interview with local sports journalist Ernesto Arturo Santana.
According to his words, the 68-year-old home run hitter is suffering from cancer of the esophagus.
"Right now, I'm in the phase of the infusions, which include cisplatin. Cisplatin is administered every 28 days. I can say that despite the illness, I feel quite well; I feel more recovered. I feel stronger and have a lot of faith that we will get through this. And I'm very disciplined, doing everything the doctors say, everything the doctor recommends," explained the legend of Cuban baseball.
"I have this faith and this gut feeling that I’m going to go out there and hit home run 406," said Junco, who expressed his gratitude to his fans and the people of Matanzas for their concern.
Already in October, journalist Yasel Porto had revealed that "the idol of Limonar, of Matanzas, and of all of Cuba is not going through his best moment. We could say he is currently in the most important fight of his life. The fight for life."
In 2023, in an interview with Julita Osendi for Cibercuba, Junco stated that he believed the exodus of Cuban baseball players was unstoppable.
"I find it difficult to change the situation because for the top talents, emigrating is the most appealing option," he stated.
The idol of Limonar, during 18 seasons in the National Series with the teams from Matanzas, achieved 11 home run titles. He was the first to reach 400 home runs.
