A moment of high tension shook the Calixto García stadium on Thursday when a pitch sparked a confrontation between Holguin's Lázaro Cedeño and Industriales' pitcher José Ernesto Pérez, causing both benches to clear in seconds and forcing the match, which many fans see as a preliminary final of the National Series, to be halted.
The video, published in the group Somos los Cachorros de Holguín, shows how the stadium roared as players from both sides rushed to the mound amid the chaos. The scene concluded with the ejection of Cedeño and Pérez, although, in an unexpected twist, it ended with an unusual gesture on Cuban fields: a hug between the two managers after conversing with the umpiring crew.
The incident didn't come out of nowhere. According to the Cuba Grand Slam website, the day before, Cedeño had already confronted pitcher Raymond Figueredo over another pitch, adding fuel to a rivalry that has intensified day by day.
The matchup between the Leones and the Cachorros has not only filled the stands but has also heightened the intensity of two teams playing as if it were already the postseason.
The series has been so fiercely contested that fans describe it as "a novel in chapters." Holguín boasts an explosive offense, while the blues have a talented pitching staff despite some losses.
This Saturday, with Calixto expecting its largest crowd of the entire season, there will be a matchup on the mound that promises more excitement, featuring Carlos Santiesteban for Holguín and Reemberto Barreto for Industriales, two pitchers with strong stats and pivotal roles in their teams.
But what happened this Thursday raises alarms again about the atmosphere surrounding Cuban baseball. The scene at Calixto García comes amid a string of violent episodes and disputes that have characterized recent seasons.
Just a few months ago, technical commissioner Miguel Rojas Rodríguez was struck with a bat by the manager from Sancti Spíritus, Eriel Sánchez after a game in Sancti Spíritus, an event that still generates outrage among journalists, former players, and fans. The National Commission decided on the temporary expulsion of the two involved from the competitive system.
This has not been the only case. Massive brawls in youth categories have also been reported, along with referee decisions that end in fights and allegations of threats against officials, highlighting an increasingly tense sports environment.
For that reason, although the final embrace between the directors of Industriales and Holguín left a positive image, it also reminded many fans of a long-standing demand: the urgent need for discipline, respect, and safety to return to the stadiums.
