The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) continues to show signs of instability in the Cuban informal market.

In recent hours, its selling price has risen again, reaching 295 CUP, coming very close to the threshold of 300 CUP.

The sales figure today for the digital currency used by the Cuban regime reflects an increase of five units compared to its value from the previous day.

The MLC has entered a roller coaster dynamic in recent days, with sudden drops or spikes in its average selling price.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The US and European currencies, for their part, remain stable

Today the dollar remains pegged for the second consecutive day at 445 CUP, a value it reached at the beginning of this week.

Also unchanged is the euro, which continues to sell for 490 CUP, as reported on December 10 by the independent media elTOQUE, which documents the fluctuations in currency prices in Cuba.

The MLC: The phoenix of the Cuban informal market

For much of 2025, the informal exchange rate of the Freely Convertible Currency has significantly dropped against the Cuban peso.

Its decline has been driven by the loss of trust among the population, the increased use of cash in dollars and the decrease in products in state stores that operate in MLC.

These elements fueled persistent rumors for months about their imminent disappearance as a relevant means of payment in the Cuban economy.

However, despite those warnings, the MLC has not disappeared; rather, it has demonstrated a remarkable ability to survive.

The MLC remains an ambiguous monetary instrument: declining, yet still functional.

In recent weeks, the Cuban government has intensified its campaign against the informal currency market and against the reference rate published by the independent media elTOQUE.

This offensive includes criminal investigations, threats to currency exchange operators, and a communication strategy focused on discrediting alternative sources of exchange rates for the dollar, euro, and other currencies.
