The wife of the Cuban political prisoner Yosvany Rosell García Caso, Mailin Sánchez, reported on social media this Tuesday that she has been unable to see him for four days even though he is hospitalized and “only a door” away, yet they deny her the opportunity to be closer to him.

García Caso remains hospitalized at the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical Surgical Hospital in Holguín, after suffering severe physical deterioration following a 40-day hunger strike that brought him to the brink of death.

In a message posted on Facebook, Sánchez described the distressing situation her family is facing: “Although the medical report states that he is recovering, I haven't been able to see him for four days. I come every day to bring him food, clean clothes, and anything he needs, but I am not allowed to enter. It is very sad. How can I not see him and let him feel our support? His family misses him. Justice, a thousand times justice and freedom.”

The wife stated that, despite going to the hospital every day, she leaves "very sad, wanting to see him," without understanding why access continues to be denied. Her testimony has generated numerous expressions of solidarity on social media.

A political prisoner in critical condition after 40 days of hunger strike

García Caso is serving a 15-year sentence for his involvement in the protests of July 11, 2021 (11J) in Holguín. In October, he began a hunger strike that lasted 40 days and, according to activists and family members, put his life at risk due to extreme physical deterioration and the lack of adequate medical attention in prison.

Organizations such as Amnesty International and the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) have reported his case and demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners in Cuba. Both entities have documented inhuman conditions, medical negligence, and degrading treatment of detainees for political reasons.

A situation that highlights patterns of repression

The refusal to allow family visits, even in a hospital setting, adds to the recurrent reports of isolation, arbitrary punishments, and communication restrictions faced by political prisoners in Cuba. According to OCDH, these practices aim to psychologically break both the detainees and their families.

Meanwhile, Yosvany Rosell García Caso's health remains in a delicate state, and his family insists that emotional support is essential for his recovery. "What can you call this?" his wife asked, visibly shaken.
