A video shared by the user Yonimiler Del Río Polo shows several children and adults searching through piles of garbage in a neighborhood of Ciego de Ávila, highlighting the rise of extreme poverty affecting Cuban families.
The scene, captured in broad daylight, highlights the social and health deterioration in the area, but users point out that it's not just a problem in that province; it is an issue that extends throughout the entire country.
"It's heartbreaking to see children rummaging through the trash, because in Cuba, parents earn a miserable salary that is not enough for anything", denounced Del Río Polo, who attributed the situation to the "Castro-communist regime".
He explained that many minors sift through the waste to find toys, recyclable cans, money, or even food, while exposing themselves to diseases due to unsanitary conditions and a lack of medication.
The activist from Avila harshly criticized the regime's indifference and the social passivity in the face of a reality that worsens every day.
“How much longer will the people endure these things?,” he wrote in his social media post.
The images from Ciego de Ávila starkly depict the human cost of the Cuban crisis. In the country, images of impoverished childhood are on the rise, as children sift through garbage for what the state fails to provide.
