Fernando Ramírez de la Cruz, the farmer who fell from a palm tree this Thursday in the municipality of Yateras, Guantánamo, is reported to be "out of danger", according to medical reports.
Ramírez, 57 years old, who suffered a serious fall after finishing trimming a palm tree this morning, “shows no visible injuries and his overall condition is stable,” according to a preliminary medical report cited by the communicator Carlos Pérez on his Facebook profile.
The patient is currently admitted to room 4B of the Dr. Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital in Guantánamo, where he was urgently transferred after suffering the accident.
According to the information, the doctors are still evaluating “a diffuse image at the level of the spine”, however, “his general condition is stable and there are no apparent risks to his life”.
Ramírez himself told the reporter that the accident occurred while he was descending from the palm tree, which he had already trimmed. When he was about five meters off the ground, “the rope or harness that was holding him came loose,” causing him to fall.
Ramírez expressed gratitude for the swift assistance provided by neighbors, the police, the Red Cross, and healthcare personnel; he also appreciated the numerous expressions of solidarity from community members and others on social media.
The publication highlighted that the pruning of palm trees is a common task in rural areas of the country and allows for the utilization of necessary natural resources. However, it is a risky job due to the height and the tools used by the farmers to carry it out.
The note warned that, in order to prevent accidents and protect the lives of those performing this task, suitable equipment must be used and strict safety measures must be followed, such as using harnesses in proper condition and ensuring "accompanied work."
The serious accident in which the Guantanamo farmer was injured took place in the Palenque popular council, in the town of Madre Vieja. People who know him initially identified him as Papo, "El Pinto."
