A Cuban living in the United States decided to showcase on TikTok the house she is building in Cuba, without realizing that her video would go viral and spark a flood of comments. She is Jennifer González (@jennifergonzalez2501), who took the opportunity to send a message to those who criticize her for investing in her homeland.
"I don't understand why when we say we have a house in Cuba, everyone comes out to criticize instead of being happy for the good fortune of others," Jennifer said as she proudly showcased her home, still under construction. In the video, you can see decorated ceilings, new furniture, a modern kitchen, and even a pool in the backyard.
The young woman explained that there are still details to finish, but she assured that she and her family are "loving the process and enjoying it 100%." Within hours, her "little house in Cuba," as she calls it, garnered thousands of reactions and became a topic of conversation among Cubans both on and off the island.
Many users congratulated her on her effort and for maintaining a piece of her homeland. "Your house is beautiful, blessings to you, people criticize because they can't," wrote a follower. "People never want to see you doing well. Your little house is gorgeous, my dear, enjoy it," commented another user, while several agreed that her video reflected sacrifice and love for her roots.
But not all reactions were positive. Some internet users questioned their decision to invest in a country where, as they pointed out, "private property is not respected." "What I feel is pity, that they spend all their money building something that tomorrow a police officer will like and take it away from you," remarked one person. "It's the same hell with a different devil," wrote another Cuban, convinced that "in Cuba everything can change from one day to the next."
Other comments went further, blending criticism with warnings: “Let Raúl find out,” one user joked. “I had to give up my house years ago when I left the country, with everything inside,” another recalled. There were also those who curiously asked if Cubans abroad can have a property in their name or if they must register it under someone inside the island, which sparked a new debate about the legality of those properties.
Amid the controversy, there were certainly voices defending Jennifer. “People can’t stand others’ progress,” wrote a supporter. “In the United States, you buy a house and it’s never yours; at least there you enjoy it,” added another. Among the hundreds of messages, many echoed the same sentiment: “Those who criticize are the ones who can’t do the same.”
Despite the negative comments, Jennifer González continued sharing new videos from her home. “We are happy with how it is turning out and enjoying the process,” she stated.
