The police arrested in recent hours the man who allegedly attacked with a bladed weapon and caused the death of the young Jimmy Castillo Veranes last Friday in the city of Guantánamo, according to a source linked to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint).
The citizen Richard Ayala Rubio has been identified as the author of the murder of Castillo Veranes on the night of December 26, revealed the Facebook profile “Guantánamo y su Verdad”.
According to the official version posted on the website, the fatal incident originated from a dispute between the victim and the aggressor over "personal differences," which "escalated to provoke the violent act."
Ayala Rubio attacked Castillo Veranes with a knife at the intersection of Paseo and Pedro A. Pérez streets in the Guantanamo capital, causing him serious injuries.
The young man was rushed to the Dr. Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital, where, despite receiving medical attention, he died shortly after due to the severity of his injuries.
The statement noted that the police have detained Ayala Rubio and are keeping him in custody, "subject to investigation for his alleged involvement in the murder," and emphasized that "the process is being carried out in accordance with the law and with respect for due process."
The profile expressed its "rejection of any manifestation of violence" and conveyed condolences to the family and loved ones of Castillo Veranes, "trusting that justice will prevail."
The murder of Castillo Veranes became known through social media, following the allegations from his family, who also criticized the police for their delay in providing information about the case.
The deceased's sister, identified as Thalia Beatriz, demanded justice for the young man and expressed the family's profound sorrow for the crime that deprived them of their loved one. Castillo Veranes was going to be a father, as revealed by his sister.
"I am making this post demanding justice for my brother. He was killed on the 26th, and the police in Guantánamo have not yet come to the house to provide any answers, nor do they have the slightest idea who could have done such a thing to my little brother," he reported this Sunday.
Distraught over the loss, she added: “There is a shattered mother, a heartbroken sister, an aunt, brothers, a father, and a pregnant wife, because of some soulless individuals who decided to take his life as if it were nothing. I only ask for justice for my brother, please, that this not be another case to go unpunished.”
In another heartbreaking text, Thalia Beatriz confessed the love she had for her brother and the devastation of his absence: “How hard it is, little brother, it may seem like I didn't love you because we were like cats and dogs, but my dear, how hard it is to see your empty bed, to walk by your room and find you gone, and to know that you will never be here again; second night without you, my dear, and I swear I can't handle this. It's a mix that grips my soul and breaks every corner of my being… and how could it not be, if you were my everything. I love you my life, I will always love you, eternal light for you.”
The murder of Jimmy Castillo Veranes has caused pain and outrage in Guantánamo, where the citizens have unanimously condemned the crime and are demanding a strong response from the judicial system. This tragic event is further evidence of the rise in violence and the increasing insecurity that have taken root in the daily lives of Cubans, amid the country's deep economic and social crisis.
