The U.S. president Donald Trump insisted that the peace agreement in Ukraine is closer than ever following his meeting this Sunday with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
At the press conference following the meeting, the Republican described it as a "magnificent meeting." Zelenski, for his part, thanked Trump for the "great meeting."
"In a few weeks, I think we'll know one way or another... But it could also go wrong," said the Republican, referring to the peace negotiations. As for the Ukrainian leader, he stated that the 20-point peace plan has progressed to "90%."
The point of contention is undoubtedly the territory of Donbas. Zelenski asserts that Ukraine's position is "very clear" and differs from Russia's; meanwhile, Trump believes it is an "unresolved" issue, increasingly nearing its resolution.
Trump said that Russia "will help" with the reconstruction of Ukraine and that he might visit Kiev after a potential peace agreement.
Similarly, Trump left open the possibility of a future trilateral meeting.
The meeting takes place in a context of intensified Russian attacks against Kiev, involving the use of missiles and drones in the days leading up to it.
Before the meeting, the magnate announced on social media that he had spoken on the phone with Putin in a very “good and very productive” manner.
