The US dollar on January 2, 2026, is quoted at 435 Cuban pesos (CUP), according to the reference rate published by the independent media elTOQUE.
The US dollar remains the most sought-after currency on the streets of the island, driven by cash shortages and the need to purchase basic goods on the black market or travel abroad. Its price reflects the growing distrust in the Cuban peso and the liquidity issues of the national banking system.
The euro reaches 480 CUP, consolidating itself as the strongest currency against the peso. Although its circulation is less than that of the dollar, it remains stable in tourist transactions and remittances from Europe.
On its part, the MLC (freely convertible currency) again decreased in price and is now quoted at 395 CUP, five pesos less than the previous day. Its value remains crucial for those who rely on state-run stores for foreign currency, where prices continue to rise and basic products are scarce.
