In the midst of the darkness of a blackout, the people of Pinar del Río found their own way to celebrate the arrival of 2026.

A video shared on social media presents a surreal scene: a tractor adorned with Christmas lights pulling a cart topped with a tree, a large figure representing the Old Year, and a dozen people on board, traversed the streets of Pinar del Río amidst honking and cheers of excitement.

But what is this..., says the person filming the video, surprised by the scene.

It is unclear whether it was another initiative from the government or if it was improvised by the residents of the westernmost province of Cuba.

The muñecón, a traditional figure of "Año Viejo" in Cuba, symbolizes the end of the year's troubles and is typically burned to make way for new wishes.

The end-of-year celebrations in Pinar del Río took place amidst prolonged blackouts that affected much of the country during the final hours of 2025, when the national electric system once again recorded high demand without sufficient generation support.
