The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia reported that Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov held a phone conversation with the Executive Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, in which he reaffirmed the Kremlin's support for the government of Nicolás Maduro in the face of what he described as an "armed aggression."
"Serguei Lavrov expressed firm solidarity with the people of Venezuela in the face of armed aggression," the Russian Foreign Ministry noted in a statement released this Saturday, January 3rd.
The diplomat assured that Moscow "will continue to support the course of the Bolivarian Government, aimed at protecting national interests and the sovereignty of the country."
During the conversation, both parties agreed on the need to avoid further escalation of the conflict and to seek a solution "through dialogue."
They also expressed their willingness to continue strengthening the "comprehensive strategic partnership" between the two countries.
Russia is one of the main international allies of the Maduro regime, with which it maintains a close political, military, and energy cooperation.
Moscow has provided weapons, fuel, and diplomatic support to Caracas in various international forums, while also criticizing the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union.
The call occurred after the attacks by the United States on Caracas, which culminated in the capture of Nicolás Maduro, who has reportedly already been transferred to New York, according to the U.S. government.
Neither Russia nor Venezuela provided details about the aggression, but both insisted on the "need to preserve internal stability."
The Kremlin reiterated that it will continue to support the Chavista regime as part of its alliance policy in Latin America, where it seeks to counter the influence of Washington.
