An episode of domestic violence that took place in Mexico City resulted in the arrest of a Cuban citizen who, in addition to attacking his partner with a knife, attempted to intimidate the police with a threat laden with religious references.

The incident occurred in the municipality of Xochimilco and drew attention due to the use of expressions linked to Afro-Cuban beliefs, although this did not prevent the intervention of the authorities.

According to Diario Milenio, the man, identified as Antonio “N”, was arrested after members of the Secretariat of Citizen Security responded to a call for help upon hearing the victim's screams from inside a residence.

When attempting to enter the home, the aggressor warned the officers that if they went in, “the curse of his saints would fall upon them,” a threat that had no effect and allowed the agents to take control of the situation and proceed with his arrest.

Inside the property, the police found an altar with various ritual objects, described by the Mexican media as connected to Santa Muerte and practices of Afro-Cuban origin such as Santería or Palo Monte.

Among the items found were candles, alcoholic beverages, and ceremonial vessels. Authorities clarified that the discovery is part of the investigation, without implying a crime or criminalizing religious beliefs in itself.

The woman, who had injuries caused by a sharp object, received medical attention following the attack.

La Prensa reported that the victim, 35 years old, sustained at least three injuries to her wrist, shoulder, and neck, and was therefore taken to a hospital.

The 38-year-old detainee has been made available to the Public Ministry, where his legal situation will be determined.

The case highlights a recurring and pressing issue such as gender-based violence, even in migration contexts where many couples face additional tensions far from their home country.

Mexican authorities are investigating the events while the victim receives care, as a reminder that no belief, national identity, or spiritual reference can justify aggression or place itself above the law.
