New details about a serious accident in Camagüey: A child among the fatalities

A tragic traffic accident that occurred in the province of Camagüey has resulted in a preliminary toll of two fatalities, including a seven-year-old child and an elderly adult, along with more than 30 injured individuals, several of whom are in critical condition.

The incident, classified as a mass accident, occurred on the night of Wednesday, January 7, on a section of the Central Highway deemed highly dangerous.

The accident: A bus overturned at the Ignacio Curve

The incident occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. (local time) at kilometer 595 of the Central Highway, in an area known as Ignacio's Curve, located in the municipality of Jimaguayú, Camagüey.

According to information released by Televisión Camagüey and Cadena Agramonte, the incident involved a Yutong bus belonging to the Mariel construction company, which was traveling from Banes in the Holguín province to Artemisa, transporting workers from the Mariel Development Zone.

According to official reports, for reasons that have not been disclosed, the vehicle "went off the road and then overturned in the underbrush", resulting in the fatal outcome.

Victims: One child deceased and dozens injured

On board the bus were 45 passengers.

The accident's toll unfortunately includes the death of a seven-year-old boy and an elderly adult, whose identities have not yet been revealed.

Health authorities reported that at least 31 people were injured, several with serious wounds.

Medical attention and current status of the injured

The first injured were treated at the Sibanicú Polyclinic, where emergency protocols were activated and medical transport was mobilized.

Later, many were transferred to hospitals in the city of Camagüey to receive specialized care.

The director of the Provincial Hospital, Dr. Rodolfo Domínguez Rosabal, specified that:

"There is one patient in critical condition and three patients reported as serious; of the injured, three were taken to the operating room with orthopedic injuries."

Among the most complex cases is a patient who required amputation of an upper limb due to the severity of his injuries.

Others have open fractures and multiple injuries that are being treated surgically.

"There was a need for amputation; and the rest are open fractures that are being surgically corrected," confirmed Domínguez.

Additionally, minimum care rooms have been set up for observation, with the aim of monitoring the patients' progress over the next 24 hours and determining the appropriate medical course of action.

Twelve of the injured patients were initially treated in the municipality of Sibanicú, but were later transferred to medical centers in the city of Camagüey.

Distribution of patients by hospitals

Military Hospital: Treats three patients reported in serious condition.

Amalia Simoni Provincial Hospital: Received two injured individuals.

Pediatric Hospital: Two minors are under medical observation, although they are reported to be out of danger.

Current status of the injured

Dr. Rodolfo, director of the Provincial Hospital, reported that the total number of injured individuals has risen to 31. Among them:

-One is in critical condition.

Three have sustained serious injuries and have required surgical intervention.

The rest remain in stable condition, under medical supervision, and will be reassessed this Thursday.

The medical personnel in the province have been mobilized to ensure timely and quality care for all those affected.

From the very first moments of the accident, an emergency response system was activated that involved the participation of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), firefighters, provincial authorities, and healthcare personnel.

The local government guaranteed accommodation and food for the families of the injured and assured the availability of all necessary medical and logistical resources for the care of the victims.

At the scene of the incident and in the medical institutions, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Camagüey, Walter Simón Noris, and the governor Jorge Enrique Sutil were present, overseeing the rescue and assistance efforts.
