A massive traffic accident that occurred in the province of Camagüey this Wednesday has resulted in a preliminary toll of two fatalities and at least 38 injuries, one of whom is in critical condition and three others seriously injured.
The accident occurred on the Carretera Central, specifically at kilometer 595, in a stretch known as the Curva de Ignacio, in the municipality of Jimaguayú.
At that point, a bus coming from Holguín, transporting workers from the Mariel Development Zone, overturned, causing a tragic accident, according to what was reported on social media by communicator Miozotis Fabel and confirmed by local medical sources.
The images of the accident illustrate the complexity of the rescue efforts in a section deemed highly dangerous due to its characteristics.
Details of the accident and initial emergency actions
The preliminary reports initially indicated 23 injured, a figure that was updated to 38 injured passengers as the hours went by.
In the initial moments, 12 of the injured were treated at the Sibanicú Polyclinic, while another 11 were directly transferred to the Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial University Hospital in the main municipality, where emergency medical attention was concentrated.
Teams from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), healthcare personnel, and authorities from the municipality of Jimaguayú and the province of Camagüey arrived at the site of the incident to coordinate the rescue and transfer of those affected.
Condition of the injured: several patients in critical condition
Dr. Rodolfo Domínguez Rosabal, director of the Provincial Hospital, confirmed that 31 of the injured were received at that institution and detailed the clinical condition of the more serious cases.
At eleven o'clock at night this Wednesday, the medical report, released by Dr. Domínguez Rosabal, indicated that:
"There is one patient in critical condition and three patients reported as serious; among the injured, three were taken to the operating room with orthopedic injuries."
One of the most complex surgical interventions involved the amputation of an upper limb due to the severity of the injuries sustained.
"Amputation was necessary; the rest are open fractures that are being surgically corrected," noted the source.
The specialist also stated that all patients have been evaluated and that the rest are reported to be under care.
"We are admitting patients to minimum care rooms for observation during these 24 hours, in order to then determine the future course of action for each of those patients," Rosabal specified.
Both the accident site and the medical facilities were visited by the main authorities of the region, including Walter Simón Noris, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Camagüey, and Governor Jorge Enrique Sutil.
As of the close of this report, the identities of the two deceased and those injured have not been disclosed.
Although the official causes of the accident have not yet been reported, the stretch where it occurred—known as Ignacio’s Curve—will presumably be subject to analysis by the authorities, given the circumstances surrounding the overturning of a large vehicle such as an interprovincial bus.
