The national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, described the death of several Cuban military personnel during the clashes that took place in Venezuela as a "historic moment," where, as he stated, they were "only carrying light weapons."

"It is a historic moment for the Fatherland. There are reasons for us to feel very proud of them. It is a moment of unity. Our Fatherland continues to be threatened," declared the former spy during the farewell held in Havana for the soldiers who died in Venezuela.

Hernández added that the Cuban military was not from an artillery platoon, but rather they were carrying out a very specific mission and “fought until they ran out of ammunition” defending “the life of Nicolás Maduro to the last consequences,” referring to the former Venezuelan president, who is currently detained by U.S. forces following an operation ordered by Donald Trump on January 3.

The leader of the CDR expressed that he was touched by the line of people who came to pay tribute to the deceased, presented by the regime as "internationalist heroes."

Hernández's statements reaffirm the direct participation of Cuban military personnel in the recent events in Venezuela, a fact that Havana had denied until now.

The official version attempts to justify the presence of troops from the island in the South American country under the argument of "revolutionary solidarity."

Meanwhile, many Cubans on social media are questioning the government's decision to send troops to a foreign conflict at a time when Cuba is experiencing a severe economic and social crisis.
