The derailment of two high-speed trains in the municipality of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, has resulted in a tragic toll of dead and injured, while authorities are still trying to assess the true scale of the disaster.

According to information confirmed by CNN en Español, the accident occurred when a train operated by the company Iryo, traveling the Málaga–Madrid route, derailed at the entrance of Adamuz and invaded the adjacent track, leading to the derailment of another train traveling from Madrid to Huelva.

The emergency services of the Junta de Andalucía initially reported at least five fatalities and 25 serious injuries, although the count remains provisional and may increase as rescue efforts continue.

European media have provided even more alarming figures. Euronews reported that the collision between the Iryo train and a Renfe Alvia would have resulted in at least ten deaths and over a hundred injuries, many of whom were trapped among twisted metal.

In videos shared by passengers, overturned cars, shattered windows, and people trying to escape through the roofs of the trains can be seen, amidst smoke and chaos.

The impact was described by witnesses as "an earthquake." Salvador Jiménez, a journalist from RTVE who was traveling on one of the trains, recounted that several passengers had to break the windows to escape, while cries for the assistance of medical staff were heard among the travelers themselves.

El País confirmed that the derailment forced a complete suspension of railway traffic between Andalucía and Madrid, one of the main transport arteries in the country.

Adif, the manager of railway infrastructure, indicated that high-speed circulation remains interrupted and that technical teams are working in coordination with emergency services to assist the victims and secure the area.

The tragedy activated the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection in Andalucía and mobilized firefighters, the Civil Guard, the Red Cross, and healthcare personnel from various hospitals in Córdoba, who made an urgent call to their staff to reinforce care for the injured.

From the site of the incident, authorities acknowledge that the situation is "very serious" and that investigations to clarify the causes of the initial derailment are just beginning.
