A young Cuban went viral on TikTok after posting a video in which she claims she has "failed as a Cuban" because she doesn't fit the stereotypes that, according to her, many associate with Cubans living abroad. "I don't have gold, I don't drive a Mercedes, I don't like Bebeshito, and I don't live in Florida", she wrote in the clip, which has generated thousands of comments on social media.
The video, shared by the user @katrinaalvarez05, quickly garnered mixed reactions. Some users praised her for breaking away from clichés and advocating for a simpler, more authentic identity, while others criticized her for generalizing or implying that such preferences define "Cubanness." "You're not failing, you're evolving," commented one internet user, while another Cuban wrote: "I failed just like you, and I don't regret it."
Among the comments, many took the opportunity to reflect on what it means to "be Cuban" outside the Island. "A Cuban is not measured by gold or by their car, but by their humility and love for their family," stated a user who received hundreds of reactions. Others, however, argued that tastes or lifestyles should not be a subject of debate. "Everyone lives as they wish. Having veneers or living in Florida doesn't make you any less Cuban," wrote another follower.
The debate remained active for days, with hundreds of messages of support, disagreement, and humor. Some expressed solidarity with the young woman and said they felt the same way: “I also failed as a Cuban,” “I’m joining the club,” several wrote. Others, however, reminded her that “living in Florida is not a sin” or that “everyone has their own way of being Cuban.”
What began as a simple reflection ended up sparking a collective conversation about identity and stereotypes. Amid the jokes, laughter, and disagreements, one phrase was repeated among the comments: "You didn't fail, you're just being yourself."
