A couple planning to travel to the United States was detained at Holguín International Airport after being caught with over 100 kilograms of meat from protected marine species, including hawksbill turtle, crab, and lobster.
The First Deputy Chief of the General Customs of the Republic, Wiliam Pérez González, announced on the social media platform X that the institution's staff detected 121 kilograms of these substances during an inspection, violating national regulations and international agreements regarding marine wildlife protection.
Those involved were penalized with the seizure of the cargo, a fine, and their detention under report to the National Revolutionary Police.
The trafficking of protected marine species is prohibited by Cuban legislation and may result in severe criminal penalties, in accordance with the international commitments the country has undertaken regarding environmental conservation.
The entity confirmed on its Facebook page that the extraction of those species from the national territory violates both internal regulations and international conventions.
Additionally, it was noted that in this case, the measures provided for such violations were applied, with legal and criminal repercussions, as the travelers were placed at the disposal of the police authorities.
