Trends in the informal market: Price of dollars, euros, and MLC for today in Cuba

For the second consecutive day, the three reference currencies in Cuba report no movement in their average selling prices.

Without changes, the informal currency market on the island woke up once again this Wednesday. It was a day of stability for the three reference currencies in the island's economic landscape.

At 7:00 a.m. on this January 28, the dollar holds at 485 CUP that it reached on Monday, as revealed by the daily report from the independent medium elTOQUE.

Also unchanged is the euro, which is once again trading at 530 CUP today. The European currency completes a week of stability,

The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), whose value has fluctuated frequently in recent days, is currently holding steady at 400 CUP.

The three reference currencies in the informal Cuban market have thus achieved a momentary stability, while at the economic level on the island, a growing uncertainty persists amid an energy crisis that shows signs of worsening.

This Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his predictions that Cuba is on the brink of collapse and that its downfall could occur in the near future, referring to the severe economic and energy dependence that the Cuban regime has maintained with Venezuela for years.

Exchange rate today 01/28/2026 - 7:23 a.m. in Cuba:

Dollar exchange rate USD to CUP according to elTOQUE: 485 CUP.

Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP according to elTOQUE: 530 CUP.

Exchange rate of MLC to CUP according to elTOQUE: 400 CUP.

According to the models from the Observatory of Currencies and Finances of Cuba (OMFi), the projections for January anticipated an upward trend:

Dollar: central projection of 465 CUP (range between 454 and 480 CUP).

Euro: projection of 505 CUP (range between 479 and 515 CUP).

MLC: estimated at around 427 CUP (ranging between 398 and 440 CUP).

As January comes to a close, the current values of the two main currencies—with the dollar priced at 485 CUP and the euro at 530 CUP—show that both currencies have exceeded expectations.

Such a scenario reinforces the perception of a market under pressure from uncertainty and distrust in the Cuban peso.
