A Latina residing in Spain went viral after confessing in a video that she was shocked to discover that in Spain, a doctor can have a housekeeper as a partner, something that, according to her, would be "unthinkable" in her home country, Colombia.
In the clip shared by the user @lau.vargas64 on TikTok, the young woman recounted an anecdote from her visit to Colombian friends in Granada. "We arrived at a spectacular chalet. The gentleman was a doctor and, when he introduced me to his wife, he mentioned that she worked cleaning other chalets. I was impressed. That’s not something you see in my country," she said.
Vargas explained that this experience made her reflect on the cultural differences between Spain and Latin America. “Here, people connect regardless of social class or the type of job. In Colombia, although it can happen, it is not common at all. There, it is frowned upon,” she said in her video, which has already garnered almost half a million views.
The reactions came quickly. Thousands of Spanish and Latin American users commented on the video, sparking a heated debate about classism and social differences. “In Spain, we don't marry for money; we marry for love,” wrote a user with over a thousand ‘likes’. Another person commented: “My husband is a doctor of law, and I met him while cleaning his house; we have been together for 25 years.”
Among the comments, some nuanced the words of the young woman. "Classism does exist in Spain, but not to the levels of South America," one user stated. Others recalled that "the king of Spain married a divorced woman and journalist, and that says it all." Several Latin Americans, for their part, admitted that classism is still deeply rooted in their countries: "The poorer the country, the more classism there is," wrote one user.
In light of the avalanche of comments, Lau Vargas clarified that his intention was not to offend or generalize, but to share his impression as an immigrant. “In Spain, I realized that people mix more, and I found that very beautiful. In my country, if a doctor falls in love with someone who cleans houses, it would be a scandal. Here, it's something normal, and that really struck me,” he concluded.
