A woman from Florida was arrested and extradited to North Carolina, accused of defrauding elderly and lonely individuals in a romantic scam network that allowed her to raise approximately three million dollars over six years.
Miami Herald reported that the Craven County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Christina Jane Julian, 56 years old, a resident of Naples, Florida.
Julian was accused of “acquisition of goods through deception worth over $100,000” and “exploitation of the elderly.” Her bail was set at $350,000.
Researchers noted that a victim from North Carolina sent $139,900 believing she was helping a supposed man return to the United States.
Authorities believe that Julian used social media and online dating sites to contact his victims.
The Federal Trade Commission warns that romance scams are based on gaining the trust of victims before asking for money for medical emergencies, travel, or visa processing.
Authorities recommend never sending money or gifts to people known only through the Internet.
