The Cuban meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez reported that a cold front is currently moving over the southeast Gulf of Mexico and will start to affect Cuban territory from the early hours of this Saturday afternoon.

According to the specialist, precipitation will increase from late morning in the western region, where showers and rain are expected to continue throughout the afternoon. In the eastern area, rain could also occur due to the presence of an atmospheric trough.

As the cold front moves toward the central region overnight, the rains will intensify, especially in the northern coastal areas. The phenomenon will reach the eastern part of the country between early morning and the morning of Sunday.

Strong northwest winds and risk of storm surges

Ruisánchez specified that starting in the afternoon, northwest winds will begin to blow at speeds between 35 and 50 km/h, with higher gusts, particularly along the northern coast of the western region. These winds will move towards the center during the night and early morning, and will reach the east on Sunday.

It also warned of an increase in the state of the sea, with waves that could exceed four meters in height.

These swells would coincide with the high tide period, which could lead to coastal flooding in low-lying areas of the northern coast, especially along the Malecon in Havana.

Drop in temperatures

During today's forecast, a cold environment is expected in the west, with maximum temperatures ranging from 22 to 24 degrees Celsius.

In the central and eastern parts of the country, temperatures will range between 25 and 28 degrees, possibly reaching 30 in the southeastern region. During the night, there will be a significant drop in temperature, with lows between 17 and 20 degrees.

Ruisánchez announced that in the coming hours he will provide a new report with details about Saturday's temperatures, and urged the public to stay informed and take precautions due to the worsening weather conditions.

Precautions are advised due to possible flooding, especially in the capital, and to stay warm in the coming days, as we are not accustomed to this prolonged winter weather in Cuba, the specialist wrote on his Facebook account.

The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) issued a Special Notice on Friday regarding the arrival of this Arctic cold front, which will cause a significant drop in temperatures.
