The United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, visited Miami International Airport this Saturday, where she met with personnel from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and held a press conference focused on the plans for modernizing the airport system.

During her speech, Noem explained that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is driving a one billion dollar investment aimed at enhancing security technology at the country's major airports, including Miami, in preparation for international events such as the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the 2028 Olympic Games.

Noem avoids confirming the suspension of flights to Cuba

In the question and answer session, Telemundo 51 questioned the official about the future of travel to Cuba, after a congressman called for them to be completely eliminated and following President Donald Trump's declaration of a state of emergency due to what he considers a threat from the Havana regime.

Noem neither confirmed nor denied a possible suspension of flights, but stated that DHS is working closely with the Department of State, led by Marco Rubio, to assess the future of relations and travel between the two countries.

Defense of TPS and warning to migrants

The secretary also referred to the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), stating that the program remains in effect, although she emphasized its temporary nature.

His statements come after a federal appeals court ruled this week that the Trump administration acted unlawfully by ending protections that benefited hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans.

Noem stated that those who lose TPS can apply for other immigration benefits if they qualify; otherwise, they must leave the country "immediately."

Political context and calls for resignation

The visit comes amid increasing scrutiny over Noem, following controversial comments linked to recent shootings involving federal agents.

In addition, two Republican senators, Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, called for his resignation this week, becoming the first lawmakers from the party to publicly request his departure from office.
