The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, announced a new trade agreement with India after having a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he referred to as “one of my greatest friends and a powerful and respected leader.”

In a message posted on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump claimed that Modi agreed to halt the purchase of Russian oil and significantly increase imports of energy, technology, agricultural products, and coal from the United States, as well as —potentially— from Venezuela.

According to the president, this decision "will help to end the war in Ukraine, where thousands of people are dying each week."

"It was an honor to speak with Prime Minister Modi this morning. We discussed many topics, including trade and the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian oil and to purchase much more from the United States," wrote Trump.

The president also announced that both countries agreed on a new trade deal that includes a reciprocal reduction of tariffs, lowering them from 25% to 18%, while India would eliminate its trade barriers and non-tariff barriers to American products.

Trump added that Modi's commitment includes "buying American" at a much higher level, with an estimated value of more than 500 billion dollars in goods and services from the United States.

"Prime Minister Modi and I are two people who achieve results, something that cannot be said for many others," the leader concluded, emphasizing that the relationship between Washington and New Delhi "will be even stronger from now on."
